Who Went Where (WWW)

The highly anticipated Who Went Where (WWW) report is proudly presented by AMA DocSIG!

We are excited to release the 2024–25 Who Went Where Report, DocSIG’s annual snapshot of the North American marketing academic job market.

This year’s survey and report reflect important updates based on feedback from students and faculty. We aligned journal classifications with tenure requirements, added methodology-specific salary information, restricted the scope to North America, and strengthened anonymity by removing geographic identifiers and social comparison questions.

The report is based on self-reported data, providing valuable transparency into the candidate experience while not fully capturing the entire market.

Highlights from this year’s results include:
• Average applications: 70 | interviews: 13 | offers: 2
• 70% of offers accepted between October and December 2024
• 56% of accepted positions in Consumer Behavior, 16% in Strategy, 26% in Modeling
• 9 accepted papers at FT50 journals (JM, JMR, JCR, JCP, JAMS, MS)
• Median 9-month salary: 170,000 USD | total with summer support: 199,300 USD

This year’s effort was led by Julia van de Sandt (USC) in her role as DocSIG Chair, who oversaw the survey overhaul and report production. We are grateful to Reza Pedarpour and Gang Yi (Kent State) for their key role in collecting and analyzing the data.

As DocSIG leadership transitions, we remain committed to breaking down information barriers and supporting doctoral students in navigating the job market.

We thank all candidates who participated and wish the very best to those entering the market this year and in the future.

Did you graduate with your Marketing PhD in 2025? Or, did you land a Marketing professor position in the 2024-25 job market?

Then DocSIG requests your participation in our 2024-25 Who Went Where survey: https://kent.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_9vEpeE46tec1W5w

The “Who Went Where” (WWW) survey is a yearly initiative that gathers information on the placement of marketing PhD graduates. A strong participation rate is crucial to ensure the data is comprehensive and beneficial to the next cohort of Marketing job market candidates and allows for cohort analysis in tenure and promotion review. For this year, we have rebuilt the survey from the ground up by removing questions that could engage participants in social comparisons or allow for geographic identification of either hiring or PhD granting institution.

This year’s survey will close on August 12th.

2024 Who-Went-Where Survey Results Are Here!
For the past 22 years, AMA DocSIG has been committed to providing valuable insights into the academic job market for doctoral students. Our annual surveys are crucial tools that not only aid tenure letter writers but also promote transparency, helping to break down systemic barriers for marginalized groups in the job market.
The 2023-24 report, reflecting the decentralized Post-Covid market, offers some variations from previous years, providing a comprehensive view of the evolving academic landscape.

This year’s survey was conducted in two parts:
1. Part 1: Collected basic information such as candidate names and institutions.
2. Part 2: Anonymously gathered data on job market experiences, teaching, publications, and salary details. We reached out to participants through AMA DocSIG, ELMAR listservs, and social media platforms like Facebook and LinkedIn. If your institution wasn’t contacted, please help us by providing your marketing department’s doctoral program coordinator’s contact information at docsig.ama@gmail.com.

Special thanks to Reza Pedarpour and Gang Yi from Kent State University for designing and administering the survey, and to our dedicated volunteer review team for their ongoing efforts to enhance the Who Went Where (WWW) survey and report.

This report was published under the leadership of our immediate past president, Brittany Beck.
Congratulations to all the new Assistant Professors starting their roles in Fall 2024! 🎉.
